How to supplement Your Income
Current Economic Conditions
Like you, I suspect, I am concerned about the current economic situation, long standing fortune 500 companies disappearing, potential collapse of the EU, countries needing to be bailed out, a mortgage crisis that doesn’t seem to go away, a Jobless Rate that seems stuck, prices for basic necessities going up and up (gas, food, etc. )
Not a day goes by without another negative report on the economy. And it seems our friends back in Washington are bouncing from one quick fix to the next – not addressing our countries long term needs or problems.
What does all this mean to us?
As a baby boomer myself who made mistakes in the stock market (who didn’t), I feel very strongly that I need to have in place multiple sources of income in addition to my retirement income (SS, IRA’s etc.) for the long term. This is why I am re-committing myself to my Internet Businesses. And I would suggest that you seriously review your financial situation as well.
Why an Internet Business?
Although Brick and Mortar Businesses will be with us for a long time, the Internet provides a forum which allows a business to be started and run rather inexpensively. It is without doubt, a crowded field and many, many people have started Internet Businesses. Worldwide over 20 Million websites are launched each year. Although it is hard to uncover up to date, accurate statistics for internet business failures, it only makes sense that like in the offline world only a portion of the businesses are the most successful. This IMHO is why we experienced the Dot COM bust in 2000, the Internet and the Market and times could not support this many large internet based companies.
Taking all this into account, why an Internet Business?
Along with many changes in the marketplace, are also major changes in marketing and advertising industries. Many newspapers are disappearing or online or both, conventional advertising like Yellow Pages has become extremely ineffective, each year television is losing viewership and revenue, etc.
And yet, businesses must continue and to reach their customers, they need some medium. This medium more and more is becoming the internet. As an example, Facebook currently has over 800 million users worldwide and they are not all college students. In fact, one of the fastest growing sectors is people over 55. And even though it seems like businesses using Facebook is still in its infancy consider this, last year Businesses spent over $1.83 Billion Dollars on Facebook Advertising.
Get Rich Schemes ……. A Warning!!!
One thing I would caution anyone about is the amount of scams on the internet. Although the FCC, is taking steps to address some of the issues, it’s an uphill battle. For one factor, the internet is world wide and the FCC does not have control over websites in other countries. So the old adage, “Caveat Emptor - Buyer Beware” and if it walks like a duck and squawks like a duck, it's a duck. - adage applies.
Some of the Guru’s online are masters or hire masters at writing superb ad copy to get you to part with your hard earned money. Anything that states, “Earn $60,000 in three weeks while spending an hour a day” “No previous experience necessary” or “…money flies out of your mail box”. It is just not true, so please double and triple check out any “sure fire plan” prior to buying. A suggestion is to buy using Paypal, this way you have some recourse if the product doesn’t work out.
A Rock and A Hard Place
So what is the answer for a Boomer, stay at home mom or someone else who needs supplemental income. Please understand, money can be made and is made on the internet every single day…..but it does take hard work and time. This is why to me to me it is wise to consider an option where training and coaching is involved. Even though I have been in offline and online business myself for over 25 years, the Internet is a new game, a game that is constantly changing every single day. It truly has a life of it’s own. Having a seasoned coach in your corner who understands the internet principles will help you become more successful faster.
